Mother's Day here is on August 12

As we Filipinos and other countries in the world celebrated Mother's Day today, Thailand is one of the countries who celebrated Mother's Day on a different month and date. Thailand celebrates Mother's day on August 12. Why? This is the Queen's birthday and because she's regarded as the mother of all Thai people, Thais celebrate Mother's day on this same day.

In school, a special program will be hosted just to honor the moms. The students will bring their moms to school and showed their respect by offering jasmine garlands and doing "krub" to their feet like one shown below:

Last year, when our students were singing songs for their mom, tears filled their eyes and others can't help bawling! It's a very touching moment.

As for me, I greet my mom twice a year...I greeted her today and another greeting is coming on August..he..he..

This is for you MOM GENEI

and FOR MY FRIENDS HERE WHO ARE EXTRAORDINARY MOMS, this is for all of you:

  10. Sawasdee Ka, Genejosh!

As a farang living in Thailand, I also get to celebrate Mother's Day twice (just as New Year..). Last August it was the first year of my daughter being in school and I was invited for the celebration as well.
It is a little bit weird for me to have a Mother's Day celebration like that. (I have to say I much prefer a Sunday without having to go to school for celebrations.) And maybe just a big hug. The way of showing respect is just a little too much for me personally.
I do like to see other (Thai) mums on a day like this. Because they know how to handle it all graciously.
